Premise: people have wings. Most of them are based off actual bird species.

World-Building:

Some people dye their feathers, it's met with about the same response as dyeing your hair unnatural colors: older generations are appalled and think it's unprofessional, no one else cares.

Healthy and large wings are used as a beauty standard: wings with glossy feathers, a lot of feathers, and that are generally large in size are desirable.

Prosthetic wing extensions to make wings look healthier/more beautiful exist, but they're ridiculously expensive, and only very wealthy people can afford them.

Feathers shed a little bit just naturally, but mostly if it's a noticeable amount of shedding the person is sick. This applies to both physical and mental illness.

Plucking a feather from your wings and giving it to someone is an incredible symbol of love and trust, and is akin to a proposal.

Friends sometimes exchange feathers that have already shed naturally, and they're keepsakes along the same lines as photographs.

Plucking someone's feathers or even taking fallen ones without permission is a huge taboo; even children know better from a young age.

comments
